The Bf 110 was far superior to its rivals in providing the speed, range, and firepower to meet its role requirements. By the end of 1935, the Bf 110 had evolved into an all-metal, low-wing cantilever monoplane of semi-monocoque design, featuring twin vertical stabilizers and powered by two DB 600A engines. On paper, the Bf 110 certainly looked formidable. It had a range of 1,500 miles (compared...

The elaborated design of the Ki-84 was finished in November 1942, whereupon the building of a prototype immediately followed. The Ki-84 Hayate ("Swift Wind") first flew in March 1943 and deliveries from Nakajima's Ota factory commenced the following month. The Allied code name for the Ki-84 was "Frank." I mentioned this on another video: It is important for people to understand that this fighter, like the Wildcat, was holding the line while newer fighters were being developed. Another point is that the brutal lessons learned facing the Zero, were learned in these old aircraft and passed down to the younger pilots. These are two contributions that are often overlooked.

The P38 was crap. Germans didn't fear it. The British also thought it was crap. It was used only for photo reconnaissance in Europe.

It's not just that the F6F was a great machine. The kill ratio was like that because of how poorly trained and equipped the Japanese pilots were towards the end of the war. In 1945, the US would have been able to clean up pretty well with the old obsolete Wildcats and Buffalos since they were up against lots of Japanese who had minimal aviation experience.

Americans tend to forget that WWII started in 1939, not 1941. Coming very late to the party, the Mustang benefited from a vast accumulation of war experience and most importantly, the Merlin with its two stage supercharger. The Mustang was arguably the most important Allied fighter in the European Theatre in 1944/45 but clearly not for the entire War. It also benefited tremendously when Jimmy Doolittle allowed the bomber escorts to aggressively attack the Luftwaffe ahead of the bomber stream. This change alone would have made ANY fighter more successful. Its interesting to note that the top 2 scoring American pilots in WW2 flew P-38's against ultra maneuverable Japanese aircraft.

I love how they throw out the fact that this single engine small plane, could carry more ordnance than the "famous" B-17. While impressive for the Skyraider, it mostly illustrates how woefully inadequate the B-17 was as a bomber. It flat out sucked, and was a slow moving, death trap. The men that flew them, were amazingly brave because they were in essence, America's version of kamikaze pilots.

My wife's great uncle flew for the Luftwaffe and claimed to have shot down a half dozen or so P38s. He said P38s were clumsy and took forever to turn. And I think they would have used Corsair to get Tamari had they been available. This video said nothing that, even if true, would change my humble opinion of the P38. The title is click bait.

A few things not mentioned... Many of the problems with the P-38 were because it was the first plane to fly so high and fast. The compressiblity issue was due to a "slow speed" airfoil and all planes of that era had similar issues though the P-38 was the worst. That being said, it wasn't a problem at lower altitudes and I'm not aware of any combat pilots definitely being lost to it. And? Tales of German fighters diving away because they "knew the Lightnings wouldn't follow" is most likely because they weren't permitted to chase German fighters. The top speed isn't really known. There were official speed trials for the G but not the later J and L. Some records were lost but it seems that no one needed to know it's official top speed. There are estimates as high as 440mph but pilots didn't complain about being too slow. The Allison engine and turbo needed to grow into each other. The original intercooler was a bad design, and a lot of the problems were fixed when they changed it, but most of the problems were concentrated in England. Part of that was because of flying long ranges at such altitude and low temperature but part if it was the fuel. At the time the lightning was introduced the fuel being used in Britain wasn't quite as highly refined as what was sent to the Pacfic or North Africa. All high altitude aircraft had some problems with it but, those Allison's again, the P-38 was hit hardest. So? The P-38 going strong to the end of the war was very different than the one the 8th AirForce, rightly I think, gave up on. A huge "what if" is "what if there had been no P-51"? The record after the Lightnings left the 8th suggests it would have gone on pretty much as history records. The performance difference between the two is fractional when running right and the engine problems were pretty much solved. A big factor in replacing the Lightnings was actually cost. She cost more than a Mustang or Jug and that worked out great for the guys privileged to fly her.

The only reason they built the P-38.. The United States had rejected the Mosquito based on the production. numbers. As they didn't have the wood working skilled labor to produce them in numbers needed. So they had taken what they learned from the British. Then built the P-38 of metal. Hell it was Hap Arnold that told them to take a closer look at the Mosquito. Their onto something. He was not wrong.

My dad was a Radioman and Gunner September of 1943. During a Training Exercise in Jacksonville FL, after the practice bomb was dropped, while going back up to join their formation, the SBD lost power and they had to make a crash landing without power. Upon hitting the Emergency Landing Field, the plane split between he and the pilot. Both had to be cut out of the wreckage. After being released from the hospital, he went into the PBY and flew in the Blister as a crew member doing Coastal Patrol and Rescue Missions off the East Coast of the USA.
